Description of the territory
Cilento National Park lies 20 ml south of Salerno. It is the second national park in Italy for extension and it has been included in Program MAB (Man and Biosphere) of UNESCO.Cilento is an area that preserved an extraordinary uncontaminated nature, thanks to the difficult practicability of its territory in prevalence mountainous. Till less than 20 years ago the only streets of access were in fact tortuous roads that insinuated along the slant of the hills on which anciently the various countries had been built to defend themselves from the attacks of the enemies.The area is very wild, with small villages spread along the coast and in the inland. Most of them don't overcome 3.000 inhabitants.
This ancient territory inhabited by humans since the prehistory (Palaeolithic period), as testified by rests recovered and still visible in some caves, particularly in the area between Palinuro and Camerota, is excellent representative of the Mediterranean flora and fauna. Cilento introduces various landscape and is characterized by variety and complexity of environments and by a high rate of biodiversity.
The coast has a typical Mediterranean aspect with a sequence of inlets, small sandy beaches, walls of rock pierced by caves, promontories dominated from ancient towers of watch that testify a past tormented by the raids of the enemies. In the inland hard mountains, of almost lunar appearance, deserve the appellative of "Dolomites of the South Italy”.
The climate is mild during the whole year and allows swimming from April till October. During the warm months the rare and perfumed Sea Lily buds on the golden sand beaches. Numerous coastal villages annually receive the Blue Flag recognition, that is given to the villages that undertake to hold clean the sea and the beaches and it certifies the absolute transparency of the waters and the cleanliness of the beaches. All this to further witness of the integrity of the nature in this area.Cilento is very interesting for lovers of scuba diver too, especially around Licosa, Palinuro and Marina of Camerota.
